Racecadotril Capsule comes with the branding “LIFILAC -R” and belongs to the category of medication known as “Antidiarrheal”. It is used to manage the symptoms of acute diarrhoea in adults and infants three months of age or older. It may be used as second-line therapy for managing acute diarrhoea, which cannot otherwise be treated in a general manner. It can be defined in this way: acute diarrhoea is characterised by having 3 or more liquid stools per day, for at least a 14-day period where the episode starts suddenly.
Racecadotril Capsule was found to contain ‘Racecadotril’, which is an inactive form of the compound and gets hydrolyzed in the small intestines to produce ‘thiorphan’, which is the active component that has an impact on the epithelium layer of the small intestine. It supports the control of the secretory diarrhoea (loosing) of the electrolytes or water, which occurs due to the action of cholera toxin or inflammation. As a result, it has a swift effect against diarrhoea, and it does not affect intestinal motility (bowel transit time or time for the food to pass through the gut).
Can I take this capsule for extended periods?
If you do not feel better after using it for 7 days, consult your doctor. Do not use this medicine for extended periods unless your doctor advises it.
Does this capsule aid in rehydration?
While it helps reduce the secretion of salts and fluids into the intestine, it does not aid in rehydration. To prevent dehydration caused by fluid loss during diarrhoea, this medicine should be taken with oral rehydration solutions (ORS).
What is the difference between acute diarrhoea and chronic diarrhoea?
Acute diarrhoea is characterized by watery stools at least three times a day for up to 14 days. In contrast, chronic diarrhoea lasts for more than 2-4 weeks.
